Box Score Pasadena, CA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team lost a tight battle in overtime by a score of 72-68 against California Institute of Technology on Thursday evening.
Arin Wade scored 23 points to lead the Mounties offensively, and Dillon Bender added 18 points on the strength of four made three-point attempts. Tanner Thomas mixed seven points with 14 rebounds and three blocks, while Nolan Doyle added 12 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and three assists.
The first half was a defensive battle in which neither side led by more than five points. Cal Tech took a 23-19Â advantage into halftime and held the lead until Doyle made a layup with 16:37 to go to give the Mounties a 29-28 edge. The two teams went back-and-forth with the lead and the home side took a 55-49 advantage with 4:02 remaining in the second half. The Mounties chipped away and were down by two when Thomas scored with 45 seconds to go to tie the game at 60-60. Mount Aloysius got a stop to force overtime on Cal Tech's last possession.
In the overtime session, the hosts jumped out to a 65-60 lead before Bender drained a three and followed it by draining three free throws after being fouled on an attempt from behind the arc on the next possession. Cal Tech responded with the next six points to seize control and held on for the win after the Mounties missed a trio of three-point attempts in the final 21 seconds.
The Mounties forced 28 turnovers, but were outrebounded 52-40 and shot just 18-for-40 (45%) at the free throw line.
Mount Aloysius falls to 4-7 overall and return to action after the New Year on January 7th against rival Penn State Altoona.
