Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, PA - The Mount Aloysius College baseball team saw its season come to a close this weekend. The Mounties lost 9-8 on Friday to Penn State Behrend on a walkoff single before falling 8-2 on Saturday to Pitt-Greensburg in an elimination game from the championship round of the AMCC Tournament.
Against Behrend, the Mounties started off strong as they built a 6-1 lead through six and a half innings of play. Mountie ace
Derrick Capiak kept Behrend in check and departed with a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Behrend added two more runs in the inning to cut the gap to 6-4, and eventually tied things up at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth.
With the momentum against them, the Mounties rallied in the top of the ninth. With two outs and a man on second,
Jesse Bortner was hit by a pitch.
Brandon Rauhauser and Bortner then advanced to second and third on a steal before
Dylan Oswalt reached on a throwing error that brought in both Rauhauser and Bortner to make it an 8-6 ballgame. The Lions would respond once again, however, as the home team rallied in the bottom of the ninth with three runs against Mountie relievers.
Against the Lions,
Benjamin Legath went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Bortner added two runs, and
Ian Helsel,
Bryn Brown,
Patrick Gully, Bortner and Oswalt each registered an RBI. Capiak threw 6.2 innings and was credited with allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits.
The Mounties then played Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday in an elimination game. Mount Aloysius jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a
Cory Dick RBI single. Greensburg responded with two runs apiece in the second and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. The Mounties cut into the deficit with an Oswalt RBI single in the fourth, but Greensburg pulled away and the lead reached 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
The Mounties had 13 hits against Greensburg but couldn't muster enough run support for starter
Daniel Resavy, who was handed the loss after tossing seven innings and allowed five earned runs while striking out four.
Connor Bowie and Oswalt each had a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, and Bortner was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Mount Aloysius concludes its season with an overall record of 19-20. The Mounties will say goodbye to reserve catcher
Seth Shaffer and relief pitcher
Paul Rogerson, but are set to bring back a majority of their roster for 2015 including headliners Capiak, Bowie and Legath.
