Box Score 2 Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team put forth two dominant efforts on their home field, as the Mounties swept #6 seed Penn State Altoona in the opening round of the AMCC Tournament by scores of 13-0 and 11-2 on Saturday morning and afternoon.
With the two-game sweep in the best-of-three opening round series, the Mounties advance to the AMCC Final Four. They will open up against #2 seed Penn State Behrend at La Roche next Friday at noon.
In game one, the Mount's
Derrick Capiak continued his outstanding conference pitching with a complete-game shutout as he scattered six hits and struck out ten. The Mounties wasted no time jumping on visiting Altoona as they struck for five runs in their first two at-bats. Highlighting the innings were an RBI double from
Benjamin Legath in the first inning and another double courtesy of
Brock Gladfelter that brought in two more runs in the second inning.
Mount Aloysius scored six more runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game.
Ian Helsel got things started with a double that cleared the bases to make it 8-0, and the scoring was capped by a
Cory Dick RBI double that created an 11-0 advantage.
Legath went 3-for-4 in game one with three RBI's and two runs scored. Helsel,
Connor Bowie, Dick and
Dylan Oswalt each added two hits.
In game two,
Daniel Resavy was effective on the hill throughout as he held Altoona to nine hits and two runs. Resavy also struck out six hitters.
The Mounties stayed hot at the plate as they scored runs in every at-bat besides the third.
Jesse Bortner and Bowie provided the power as each clubbed home runs early on. Bortner hit a three-run shot that made it 5-0 in the bottom of the first, and Bowie slugged a two-run homer in the second to create a 7-0 advantage as the Mounties cruised to victory.
Bowie was 3-for-4 in game two with three runs scored and three RBI's. Oswalt finished 4-for-4 in game two to finish with six hits on the day.
