Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team lost in a close contest in their season opener on Saturday afternoon as visiting Washington & Jefferson College defeated the Mounties by a score of 2-1 in double overtime.
The Mounties got off to a fast start and
Jim Smith scored the first goal of the contest in the 21st minute off of a direct kick from 20 yards out. Washington & Jefferson would respond as Justin Nolfi freed himself at the top of the box and struck for the visitors to make it a 1-1 game 29 minutes into the game. The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 throughout the half.
Both teams created opportunities throughout the second period of play, but goalkeepers
Justin Hann and Jon Best were up to the task.
After a scoreless first overtime, the visitors scored the winner after a scramble in the box following a corner kick two minutes into the second overtime.
Hann finished with six saves for the Mounties. Smith led the home side in shots with three, while
Patrick Chea recorded two shots.
Mount Aloysius returns to action on Wednesday with a road contest against Penn State Harrisburg at 7 p.m.
