Box Score Steubenville, OH - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team lost on a penalty kick attempt in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon to Franciscan University as the Barons defeated the Mounties by a final score of 4-3.
The Mounties got off to a fast start as
Patrick Chea scored just 29 seconds into the contest when he intercepted a defenders past and scored to create an early 1-0. The host Barons tied it up at 1-1 just under eight minutes later on the foot of John Imbimbo, and the two teams went into the break even at 1-1.
After Franciscan's Leo Hermann scored two goals eight minutes apart in the early stages of the second half, the Mounties began a comeback attempt. With 30 minutes to play, Chea drove in a cross that deflected off of a Baron defender before finding the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game. Less than 3 minutes later,
Jim Smith scored on a breakaway goal off of a through ball from
Todd Azeles to tie things up at 3-3.
The Mounties were whistled for a red card at the top of the box in the 75th minute of play and were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. Despite playing a man down, the Mounties continued to create chances against the Baron defense through the play of
Graham Hunter, Smith and Chea.
Both sides continued to trade chances through the end of regulation and the first overtime before another controversial call went against the Mounties in the 103rd minute of play. The referee whistled for a penalty kick for the host Barons that was converted by Imbimbo to end the contest.
Mount Aloysius returns to play on Saturday with a home contest against Hilbert at 3 p.m.
