Box Score Delaware, OH - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team put up a tremendous effort in their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, but ultimately fell by a final score of 1-0 to top-ranked Calvin College on Friday evening on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
Calvin College, which entered the game ranked #1 in the country with a record of 20-0-1, scored just 1:58 into the contest off of a corner kick for the game's only goal. The Knights continued to put pressure on the Mounties but goalkeeper
Justin Hann and the Mountie defense were up to the task throughout the remainder of the first half. The Mounties entered halftime down 1-0.
In the second half, the Mounties started to find their opportunities.
Alex Duthie got on the end of a
Todd Azeles set piece with a header at the 57:37 mark, but his attempt sailed high.
Michael Clendenin had a header opportunity saved nearly seven minutes later, and
Thomas Sloan got free on the edge of the box and ripped a shot wide with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest.
Hann, recently named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Year, was tremendous throughout the game to keep the Mounties in it. He made a number of acrobatic saves in the second half to keep the deficit at one goal.
"Justin showed that he is one of the top keepers in our region and perhaps the country with his performance tonight," Head Coach
Matt Davis said. "I've seen him train and play for three years now and even I was blown away with how he competed tonight on the biggest stage."
With nine seconds remaining Mount Aloysius found one last opportunity but a
Jim Smith shot from inside the box was deflected out of bounds to end the game.
"Calvin College was as good as advertised and they were the better side. They are in the NCAAs year after year and we came out in the first 10 to 15 minutes a bit shellshocked. But once we settled in we put forth an effort that we were all extremely proud of even in defeat," Davis said.
Hann made a career-high 15 saves in net for the Mounties, who conclude their season with an overall record of 12-7-2. The Mounties season was a historic one with a program-record 12 wins, a regular season and postseason AMCC Championship, and the team's first trip to the NCAA Tournament.Â
Reflecting upon the season, Davis said, "Our success this season was a credit to each and every member of our program. We have a team full of underdogs and grinders that just kept working each day to improve, and each guy put the team first. That made the difference."
