Box Score Westminster, MD - A cold shooting performance in the 4th quarter doomed the Mount Aloysius women's basketball team in a season-opening loss to Juniata College on Saturday afternoon. The Mounties fell by a final score of 58-41 to the Eagles as part of the McDaniel College Tournament.
Mount Aloysius led 40-38 at the end of three quarters as the Mounties used strong defense to build a slight lead. However, the Mounties scored just one point in the final quarter as the team went 0-for-16 from the floor.Â
The two sides traded the lead back-and-forth early on as the Mounties led 11-7 before an 8-0 run from the Eagles gave Juniata a 15-11 lead with 9:33 remaining in the second quarter. Mount Aloysius then went on a 9-4 run capped by a
Kara Cordell three-point shot to take a 20-15 advantage. Juniata ended the half on 14-5 run to take a four-point lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Juniata expanded the lead to as large as 13 at 38-25 with 6:23 remaining before Mount Aloysius embarked on a 15-0 run. The Mounties took a two-point lead into the final quarter as
Abbie Zinobile drained a shot from behind the arc with 14 seconds left to play.
Cordell was the lone Mountie in double figures as she finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds, including nine rebounds on the offensive end.
Antwayne' Parks registered eight points and five rebounds, while
Katie Bracken grabbed seven boards and recorded two steals.
Mount Aloysius will play in the consolation game of the tournament tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Hood College.
