Box Score 2 Huntingdon, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team lost to Penn State Altoona 90-80 in the opening game of the Coaches v. Cancer Classic at Juniata College on Friday, but responded with an 81-79 victory over Cazenovia College in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday.
The Mounties fell into a 14-point halftime hole against Altoona as the Lions held a 54-40 halftime lead. The Mounties gradually chipped away in the second half and cut the lead to four points on a
Dillon Bender three-point shot with 9:07 remaining, but the Lions scored the next eight points and never looked back while registering the victory.
Arin Wade scored 24 points and grabbed five rebounds in defeat, while
Jourdan Lamberth (12 points) and
Tre Brown (10 points) also finished in double figures.
The second game against Cazenovia was a back-and-forth battle throughout the contest. Mount Aloysius jumped out to a 29-19 lead in the first half and held an 11-point lead with 4:06 to go in the period. Cazenovia cut into the deficit with a 13-4 run to end the half, as the Mounties took a 39-36 edge into halftime. The Mounties gained control once again in the second half and took a 13-point advantage halfway through the period. However, Cazenovia once again wouldn't go away as the Wildcats made things interesting by cutting the lead to four points with 38 seconds left. Mount Aloysius held on with free throws from Bender and
Chad Eisenhuth before a Cazenovia layup at the buzzer created the final scoreline.
Bender notched 24 points in the victory. Brown, Lamberth, Eisenhuth and
Joe Dziabo also finished in double figures in a balanced scoring attack. Brown added three assists and three steals. The Mounties shot 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from three-point range in the win.
Mount Aloysius returns to action next weekend at the Roanoke Turkey Weekend Tournament. The Mounties will tipoff against Goucher College next Saturday at 2 p.m.
