Box Score Frostburg, MD - Led by a strong defensive effort and a double-double performance from
Abby Kulick, the Mount Aloysius women's basketball team earned their first victory of the season with a 58-54 win over host Frostburg St. on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
The Mounties limited the Bobcats to a 21-for-63 (33.3 percent) shooting performance from the floor and forced Frostburg into 21 turnovers. Kulick registered a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout as the Bobcats took a 17-16 edge after one quarter. Neither side could pull away in the second, and the Mounties got a bucket from
Kara Cordell and a free throw from
Breana Kendrick in the final minute to take a 29-27 lead into halftime. Mount Aloysius came out strong to start the second half as the Mounties took their largest lead of the game at 38-29 two minutes into the third quarter.Â
Frostburg gradually climbed back into the game and cut the deficit to two points at 49-47 with 6:15 remaining in the final quarter. The two teams then stayed deadlocked before the Bobcats took a one-point advantage at 54-53 with 1:12 to go in the ballgame. Kulick came up huge on the Mount's next possession with a three-point shot to provide a two-point lead, and
Alexia Servello hit a layup with 26 seconds left. The Mounties got two stops on the defensive end as time ticked down to seal the win.
Servello also finished in double figures with 10 points and dished three assists, while Kendrick mixed nine points, four steals and three assists. The Mounties took care of the ball with just 10 turnovers on the offensive end.
Mount Aloysius will return to action for their conference opener on December 2nd at Franciscan University at 8 p.m.
