Men's Soccer Wins AMCC Championship

Box Score
Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team won the AMCC Championship on Saturday afternoon over Penn State Behrend. After a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods, the Mounties won 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout.

After Behrend took a 1-0 lead after the first set of shooters, the sides traded penalty kick goals with Thomas Sloan and Kyle Marshall converting for the Mounties. After Justin Hann stopped Behrend's fourth attempt, Todd Azeles scored to even the shootout at 3-3 heading into the final shooters. Hann again came up huge with his second consecutive penalty stop, and Patrick Chea won it for Mount Aloysius with a low shot to the keeper's right.

"Our guys believed all year long that they were capable of winning a championship. We knew it would be extremely difficult, and if you look at today's result it certainly took everything we had up into our last kick," Head Coach Matt Davis said. "I couldn't be more proud of every single one of our players."

The game was a defensive battle throughout as Hann and Behrend keeper Will Cole kept the opposition off the board. Azeles appeared to have the first goal of the game five minutes into the contest. He hit a hard driving free kick from midfield that sailed over the keeper's head and into the net, but the goal was called back after the referee ruled it was an indirect kick.

After a scoreless first half, Marshall had the Mounties best chance in the second half with a header that sailed just over the bar. Diron Duah also had a good opportunity on a free kick from 30 yards out, but his shot was stopped by Cole. The Lions responded with their best scoring chance when Nick Stewart picked up a loose ball in front of goal, but his strike was tipped away by Hann.

The Mounties, who played a man up in the two overtime sessions after a Behrend red card late in the second half, continued to push forward but had a tough time finding the final ball. With three minutes remaining in the second overtime, the Mounties were close to winning it when Jim Smith sent in a cross that Kevin Ouellette chested just high above goal.

The championship win is the first in program history for men's soccer. Hann, Azeles and Chea were named to the AMCC All-Tournament Team. The Mounties will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. to find out their location and opponent for the NCAA Championships. To watch the NCAA selections, visit here.
