Tough First Half Costs Mounties in Loss

Greensburg, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team fell behind 35-20 at halftime and couldn't recover in a 72-60 defeat to host Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday evening in AMCC action.

The Mounties were close early, and an Abby Kulick layup cut the deficit to 13-10 with 10:19 remaining in the first half. The Greensburg lead was 18-17 after Kaleigh Roop scored off of a feed from Alexis Restori with 5:35 remaining. Mount Aloysius went cold in the final minutes of the first half as Greensburg went on a 17-3 to close the period. In the second half of play, the Mounties cut the advantage to single digits on a number of occassions. A jumper from Sydney Horel made it a 53-46 game in favor of the home side with 9:17 on the clock, and a Restori layup with 8:11 to go brought the deficit down to five points. The Mounties brought the lead down to five once again with five minutes left on a three-point shot from Kulick, but couldn't get any closer as Greensburg hit their free throws down the stretch.

Kulick paced the Mountie offense with 17 points as she shot 12-for-20 from the free throw line while adding four rebounds and two steals. Olivia Rupp finished in double figures with 11 points to go with seven boards, and Restori added 10 points. Abbie Zinobile had nine points and seven rebounds.

The two teams combined to shoot 78 free throws on the evening, as Greensburg went 25-for-34 while Mount Aloysius registered a 28-for-44 showing. Mount Aloysius won the rebound battle 38-32 but lost the turnover battle 24-16.

The Mounties fall to 10-13 overall and 7-10 in conference play heading into their regular season finale against Pitt-Bradford on Saturday on the road at 1 p.m. Mount Aloysius is in the race for the sixth and final playoff spot with Franciscan (7-10), Penn State Behrend (6-11) and D'Youville (6-11). However, a win against Pitt-Bradford will clinch the playoff spot for the Mounties.
