Mount Baseball Splits with Nationally-Ranked Case Western

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Butler, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with #25 Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon at a neutral site game at Pullman Park in Butler, PA. After falling by a score of 9-1 in game one, Mount Aloysius defeated the Spartans 7-4 in game two.

In game two, the Mounties trailed 4-2 before scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. Kirk Davis began the rally by scoring off of an errant throw following a Benjamin Legath bunt. Connor Bowie then scored to tie the game at 4-4 after beating a throw home following a Joshua Bracken grounder to first base. Legath then scored on a wild pitch before Bryn Brown clubbed a double off the wall to score Bracken to make it a 6-4 ballgame. In their next at-bat, Mount Aloysius added to the lead as Ian Helsel scored off of another wild pitch to make it 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Effective relief pitching from Rodney Patterson and Brady Wright in the final three innings kept the Spartans off the board as the Mounties seized the game two victory. The combination of Christopher Nolan, Patterson and Wright combined to pitch 5 and 2/3 scoreless innings for the ballgame.

In game one, the Mounties hung tough early before the Spartans, ranked 25th in the latest DIII College Baseball rankings, pulled away. Kyle Droz got the start on the hill for Mount Aloysius and limited Case Western to three runs in six-plus innings. The Mounties started to get things going offensively in the bottom of the sixth inning when trailing 3-0. A Patrick Gully walk was followed by a single from Helsel and another walk from Bowie to load the bases. Legath then drove through an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1 with one out, but the Mounties stranded the bases loaded and the deficit was 3-1 after six innings.

Mount Aloysius loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the seventh, but weren't able to convert. The Spartans then exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth inning to seize control with a 9-1 lead.

Greg Wierzbicki pitched a scoreless ninth inning before the Mounties were retired in their final at-bat to end game one.

Mount Aloysius now has a record of 8-5 heading into their conference opener on Wednesday on the road at Pitt-Greensburg. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
