Box Score 2 Greensburg, PA - After falling by a score of 17-3 in game one, the Mount Aloysius baseball team responded with a dramatic 9-8 extra-inning victory in game two against host Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday afternoon in an AMCC opening doubleheader for each team.
In the opener, the Mounties got off to a fantastic start as
Ian Helsel led off the game with a home run to left field to provide a 1-0 advantage. Greensburg tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second before taking a 3-1 lead after three innings. The Bobcats continued to increase their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth before Mount Aloysius got two runs back capped off by an RBI single from
Connor Bowie in the visiting fifth that made it a 7-3 ballgame.
Greensburg's bats went off for nine hits in the bottom of the fifth, including four doubles, as the home side took a commanding 15-3 lead after five innings of play on their way to the victory.
Helsel and
TJ Wardwell each went 2-for-3 in game one.
In game two, Mount Aloysius responded with a strong start that saw the visitors jump out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Benjamin Legath hit a two-run homer in the top of the first to make it 2-0, and
Kyle Droz slammed a solo home run in the second inning to create a 3-0 lead. Following Droz's homer, Bowie registered an RBI single and Legath clubbed a double that brought in two to make it a 6-0 ballgame. Helsel extended the lead to 7-0 with an RBI single in the top of the third.
The Bobcats would get right back into it with four runs in the fourth inning before a three-run home run tied things up at 7-7 after five innings of play. The Mounties retook the lead with an RBI single from Legath that drove in
Kirk Davis to make it 8-7 in the sixth inning, and
Christopher Nolan continued his effective relief pitching by keeping Greensburg off the board in the bottom of the inning.
Greensburg entered their final at-bat needing one run to force extras, and the hosts did just that with a solo home run with one away to tie the game up once again at 8-8. The two sides went to extra innings.
Both teams threatened in the eighth inning. Davis ripped a triple with two outs before being stranded at third in the top of the frame, and Greensburg put two runners on base with one out before
Brady Wright rolled a doubleplay ball to force another extra inning.
In the ninth, Droz came up clutch with an RBI single to bring in
Bryn Brown and make it 9-8. Wright then retired the side in order to complete a dramatic second game victory for Mount Aloysius.
Legath went 3-for-5 at the plate in game two with five RBI's. Helsel, Davis and Droz added two hits apiece, and Davis scored three runs. Wright was credited with the victory after tossing 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings. The Mountie bullpen of Nolan,
Rodney Patterson and Wright pitched four innings combined while allowing just one run.
With the split, the Mounties are now 9-6 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference play. They will travel to Gettysburg College for a non-conference matchup tomorrow with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. before hosting Penn State Behrend on Saturday for an AMCC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
