Box Score 2 Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team picked up two huge victories with identical 4-3 scorelines in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Penn State Behrend on Sunday afternoon.
In game one,
Connor Bowie got the Mounties off to a fast start with a two-run homer that brought in
Ian Helsel to give the home side a 2-0 advantage after one inning. After Behrend cut the deficit to 2-1,
TJ Wardwell drove home
Patrick Gully with a double to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Mount Aloysius tacked on another run in the fifth inning as Helsel doubled to score Wardwell to create a 4-1 scoreline.
Behrend added a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to cut the gap to 4-3. With a runner on third and two outs,
Brady Wright registered the last out of the game to seal the win for the Mounties.
Cameron Kyle recorded the victory in game one as he allowed one earned run in 4 and 1/3 innings on the mound while striking out five. Helsel, Bowie and Wardwell each notched two hits and one run scored.
Game two was a low scoring affair as the Mounties
Kyle Droz limited Behrend to two runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. The two runs created a 2-0 advantage for the visitors until
Cory Dick ripped an RBI single to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. The Mounties tied the ballgame up in the seventh inning after a
Kirk Davis groundout brought in Wardwell.
In the home eighth,
Bryn Brown lasered a one-out triple before
Jesse Bortner brought him in with a sacrifice bunt to give the Mounties their first lead at 3-2. Mount Aloysius couldn't shut the door in the visiting ninth as Behrend tied things up at 3-3 with a one-out RBI single.
With one out in the Mounties at-bat in the ninth, Helsel continued his hot hitting with a double.
Kirk Davis then came up with the game's winning hit with a double to bring in Helsel and give Mount Aloysius the two-game sweep.
Christopher Nolan was credited with the victory for Mount Aloysius as he improved to 3-0 out of the bullpen for the season. Helsel and Dick each had two hits offensively in game two.
Mount Aloysius improves to 11-7 overall on the season and 3-1 in conference play. They return to action against first-place La Roche this week before a weekend doubleheader against Hilbert College.
