Box Score 2 Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius baseball team split an AMCC doubleheader for the second consecutive day as the Mounties defeated Medaille College 12-8 in game one before dropping game two by a final of score 10-4.
In game one, the Mounties exploded for five runs in their first at-bat.
Benjamin Legath singled to score
Ian Helsel to get the scoring started. Legath and
Connor Bowie scored after a
Kyle Droz single and errant throw to make it 3-0 before the Mounties added two more runs before the inning was over.
In the third inning, the Mounties added one more run in support of
Derrick Capiak as a two-out single from
Bryn Brown scored
TJ Wardwell to make it a 6-0 ballgame. The Mavericks fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the hosts scored three runs in their next at-bat to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Mounties added one run in the top of the sixth when
Patrick Gully ripped a single that scored Legath.
Rodney Patterson then retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning as Mount Aloysius held a 7-5 advantage helding into the final frame.
In their final at-bat of the ballgame, the Mount dropped five runs to seize control. Bowie,
Cory Dick,
Kirk Davis and Brown each registered RBI singles as part of the offensive surge. The Mavericks got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, but Patterson ultimately shut the door for the Mounties.
Capiak earned the victory in game one as he pitched 5 and 1/3 innings to improve to 3-2 on the season. Brown finished 4-for-6 at the plate in game one, while Helsel, Legath and Droz each registered three hits.
In game two, Mount Aloysius again jumped out to an early lead. In the second inning, Gully broke the scoreless tie with a bases-loaded single that scored Dick, and Brown followed with another RBI single to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Medaille scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead, and the Mavericks added five runs combined in their next two at-bats to take a commanding 10-2 advantage. Mount Aloysius got two runs back in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single from Bowie and RBI double from Legath to make it 10-4. However, the Monties wouldn't get any closer as the Mavericks notched the 10-4 victory.
In game two, Brown continued his hot hitting with two more hits. Davis added two hits, and
Brady Wright allowed just one unearned runs in 3 and 2/3 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
With the split, the Mounties move to 14-11 overall and 5-5 in the AMCC standings. Mount Aloysius will return to action tomorrow with a non-conference game at Shenandoah University with first pitch set for 4 p.m. Shenandoah was ranked ninth in the nation in latest the D3baseball.com poll.
