Box Score 2 West Seneca, NY - A two-run home run from
Ian Helsel in the top of the 10th inning in game two pushed the Mount Aloysius baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of host D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon in AMCC action. The Mounties won game one 3-0 before a dramatic 8-6 victory in extra innings in game two.
In game one,
Derrick Capiak was in command throughout on the mound as he allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight for the game. The win improved Capiak to 4-2 on the season.
In the top of the first inning, the Mounties got all the scoring they would need when
Bryn Brown sent through an RBI single to score
Kirk Davis. Mount Aloysius added two runs in the fourth inning with RBI singles coming from
TJ Wardwell and Helsel to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Capiak took control the rest of the way to lead Mount Aloysius to the game one win.
In game two, the Spartans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off of
Daniel Resavy in their first at-bat before the Mounties evened the score at 2-2 in the second inning courtesy of a solo home run from
Kyle Droz and a sacrifice fly from
Patrick Gully that scored
Tristan Gelvin.
Mount Aloysius was down 4-2 in the sixth inning when Gelvin slugged a three-run homer to give the Mounties a 5-4 lead. D'Youville tied the game in the bottom of the inning before the Mounties responded with an RBI double from Droz to make it 6-5 in favor of the visitors. The Spartans tied it up once again in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run.
Neither team could put a run across the plate until Helsel's home run with two outs in the 10th inning. Helsel's shot gave the Mounties an 8-6 advantage, and
Brady Wright earned the win with a scoreless final inning on the hill.
Resavy pitched six innings in game two and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out 10. Droz led the Mounties offensively with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI's.
Jordan Campano and
Benjamin Legath added two hits apiece.
Mount Aloysius improves to 7-5 in conference play and 17-13 overall. The Mounties will return to the field on Monday with a doubleheader at home against Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
