Crimson Hawks Take Two from Mounties

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team was defeated by scores of 10-4 and 11-10 by Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at home.

In game one, the two sides were even after one inning of play. The Crimson Hawks hit a solo home run to begin the ballgame before the Mounties tied it up on a Kyle Droz RBI single that scored Bryn Brown. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until IUP notched a combined nine runs in their at-bats in the fourth and fifth innings of play to take a 10-1 lead.

Mount Aloysius responded in the bottom of the fifth as Brown singled home Ian Helsel to make it 10-2. Two batter later, Jesse Bortner slammed a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 10-4. Mount Aloysius put two runners on base in the sixth but left them stranded, and the Mounties were retired in order in their final at-bat.

Brown went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game one, while Bortner was also 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Bryja was handed the loss on the mound for the Mount.

In game two, the Crimson Hawks established an early lead with five runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second, the Mounties would explode for eight runs. TJ Wardwell and Ian Helsel both walked with the bases loaded to bring in two runs. An IUP error combined with another walk made it 5-4 before Kyle Droz and Cory Dick both notched singles that brought in two runs apiece to give Mount Aloysius an 8-5 advantage.

IUP came back with a big inning at the plate in the top of the fifth as the visitors scored six runs to establish an 11-8 lead. Droz drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth to make it 11-9, and Patrick Gully lashed a double in the bottom of the sixth to bring in Joshua Bracken and make it an 11-10 ballgame.

With one away in the Mounties final at-bat, lightning in the area caused a delay. When the teams resumed play, Brown hit a single up the middle. However, the next two Mountie hitters grounded out to end the contest.

Brady Wright and Christopher Nolan combined for effective relief pitching for the Mounties as the duo combined to throw 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings. Brown, Dick and Gully registered two hits apiece in game two. Droz had three RBIs and Jordan Campano scored two runs.

Mount Aloysius falls to 17-15 overall on the season and will return to play on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Penn State Altoona beginning at 1 p.m.
