Box Score 2 Cresson, PA - After falling in game one by a score of 8-7, the Mounties Aloysius baseball team responded with a 3-1 victory in game two to earn a doubleheader split against visiting Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon.
The Mounties went down 3-1 after two innings and 5-2 and four and a half innings before
Connor Bowie laced a double in the bottom of the fifth that scored two runs to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Altoona would responded in its next at-bat with three runs to increase their advantage to 8-4.
In the bottom of the sixth,
TJ Wardwell brought home
Dalton Garlock with an RBI single. An inning later, Bowie smashed a two-run home run to cut the lead to 8-7. However, Altoona retired the Mounties final two hitters to take the close victory.
Bowie went 3-for-4 with a home run and double while adding three RBI's and one run scored in game one.
Bryn Brown added two hits, while
Cameron Kyle was handed the loss after allowing six earned runs in five innings on the mound.
Christopher Nolan pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Mount Aloysius.
Game two featured a pitcher's duel as the Mount's
Kyle Droz pitched 7 and 1/3 innings while allowing just seven hits and one run. He struck out eight hitters before
Brady Wright came in and earned the save with 1 and 2/3 innings in relief.
Altoona scored a run in their first at-bat, then neither team got anything going offensively until the Mounties scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on second and third and one out, Brown drove in Garlock and
Tristan Gelvin to hand the Mounties a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Bowie knocked in Brown with a triple to make it a 3-1 game on their way to the win.
Bowie hit two triples in game two and finished with a cycle for the doubleheader and six total hits.
Mount Aloysius now stands at 18-16 overall and 8-6 in AMCC play. The Mounties are currently in fourth in the conference standings and will face third-place Pitt-Bradford today in their final conference games of the season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Mount Aloysius.
