Capiak and Resavy Lead Mounties Past Mavericks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Cresson, PA - Led by two dominant pitching performances from Derrick Capiak and Daniel Resavy, the Mount Aloysius baseball team swept Medaille by scores of 2-0 and 5-0 at home in the opening round of the AMCC playoffs on Saturday. With the victories, the Mounties advance to the AMCC Final Four for the fourth consecutive season and will face #2 seed Penn State Behrend next Friday at 1 p.m.

In game one, Capiak threw all seven innings for a complete game and struck out eight. The Mounties got on the board in the first inning as Bryn Brown drove in Ian Helsel on a sacrifice fly after Helsel tripled to lead off the ballgame.

The Mounties added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Helsel singled and advanced to third on a Connor Bowie single. Benjamin Legath then brought in Helsel with a single to make it 2-0 in favor of Mount Aloysius. Capiak allowed just one hit in Medaille's final two at-bats to secure the victory.

Helsel and Legath each had two hits in game one for the Mounties.

Resavy then turned in his best pitching performance of the season in game two with a complete-game shutout. Resavy allowed just two hits and struck out two.

Mount Aloysius got all of the offense it would need when Connor Bowie hit his eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the first. Bowie's shot was a two-run homer, and the Mounties made it 4-0 in the third inning as Legath drove home two with a single. Mount Aloysius closed the scoring in the sixth when Dalton Garlock came around on an error to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Resavy then induced three straight groundouts in the Mavericks final at-bat to seal the win and series sweep.

Mount Aloysius improves to 22-18 overall heading into the AMCC Final Four next weekend.
