Mounties Shutout Spartans In Conference Opener

Box Score
Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team used two first-half goals and a strong defensive performance to defeat visiting D'Youville College by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams.

The Mounties dominated play early on and found their first goal at the 18:02 mark of the first half. Jim Smith received the ball on the wing and beat a D'Youville defender on the dribble before slotting a pass into the middle, where Thomas Sloan knocked a shot past the charging keeper. Mount Aloysius kept the pressure on and increased the lead eight minutes later. Molia Sesay made a strong run down the left wing and whipped in a cross to the far post. Smith was there to volley the cross to the opposite corner, and the Mounties led 2-0.

Zachary Herr and Dwayne Andre Thorpe both had chances close to goal in the half's final minutes, but were unable to convert as the Mounties took a two-goal lead into the half.

D'Youville came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half. They had an open header off of a corner, but Justin Hann made a tremendous reflex save to keep the shutout intact. The Mounties responded as Kevin Ouellette lasered a shot from the top of the 18, but D'Youville keeper Brett Matthews made a nice stop to keep the deficit at two goals.

The Mountie defense led by Hann, who made four saves, kept the Spartans scoreless down the stretch as the Mounties secured the victory.

The Mounties held a 20-7 advantage in total shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks taken for the game.

Mount Aloysius improves to 4-4-1 overall and will host Franciscan in an AMCC matchup on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
