Box Score Altoona, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team registered their third straight victory and second consecutive shutout as the Mounties defeated Franciscan University by a final score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was moved to Penn State Altoona's turf field due to field and weather conditions in Cresson. Mount Aloysius came out strong on the ball and dominated possession early on with the best opportunity in the early stages coming off a
Jim Smith cross that found the head of
Kevin Ouellette. Ouellette struck the ball but his header slammed against the crossbar and the game remained 0-0.
Mount Aloysius would find its first goal with eight minutes remaining in the half. Smith sent in a long throw that bounced before
Ricky Abbs flicked it into the side netting to provide a 1-0 advantage. It appeared the Mounties would go into halftime with a one-goal lead. However, with 30 seconds to play the Mounties countered and
Zachary Herr found
Thomas Sloan at the top of the 18. Sloan took two dribbles to the right and struck a shot into the low, near corner to give Mount Aloysius a 2-0 lead and momentum heading into halftime.
Franciscan pressured throughout the second half, but the Mountie backline led by
Justin Hann limited the Baron chances. The Mounties had two great opportunities late to increase the lead, but a Smith shot at the backpost went wide and Ouellette had a penalty kick saved.
Hann finished with six saves. The Mounties outshot the Barons 10-7.
Mount Aloysius returns to action Saturday when they will travel to Hilbert College for a 1 p.m. matchup.
