Mounties Comeback Attempt Falls Short

Washington, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to nearly tie the game, but ultimately fell short in their season opener at Washington & Jefferson College on Friday evening by a final score of 2-1. 

The Presidents controlled play in the first half as they outshot the Mounties 10-1, and opened up the scoring on a free kick with six minutes remaining in the first half. Justin Hann kept the deficit at one goal with a sprawling tip save as the half wound down.

The Mounties dominated possession in the early stages of the second half but were unable to break through for a goal. With 27:51 to go, Washington & Jefferson picked up a missed pass and scored on a shot from deep to make it 2-0. 

Mount Aloysius fought back and earned a penatly kick seven minutes later, which Jim Smith converted to cut the gap to 2-1. The Mounties played a man up for the remainder of the game after a W&J red card. Kevin Ouellette had the Mount's best chance as the game wound down as he broke through on a breakaway after a through ball from Diron Duah, but his shot was stopped. 

The Mounties outshot the Presidents 11-2 in the second half and had eight corner kicks for the game compared to three for the home team. Smith led the Mounties with four shots, while Hann stopped three shots in net. 

Mount Aloysius returns to the field for their home opener on Sunday against Albright College at 2 p.m.
