Men's Basketball Hangs Tough in Defeat to Redhawks

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team played well for long stretches, but it wasn't enough as the Mounties fell by a final score of 86-76 on Wednesday evening on their home floor to La Roche College in AMCC competition.

The two teams traded baskets early on and the Mounties would lead 17-13 after Dillon Bender drilled a three-point shot while being fouled. Bender converted the free throw with 11:29 on the clock, and the Mounties led 22-17 with 7:32 remaining after Bender converted on another shot from behind the arc. La Roche responded as the half came to a close as the Redhawks went on a 9-3 run to close the session and took a one-point advantage into the break at 32-31.

La Roche increased their lead to 48-41 with 14:35 left in the ballgame, and their advantage reached to 59-48 with nine minutes showing on the clock. The Redhawks continued to hold a small advantage, but the Mounties put the pressure on after Brian Reams hit three foul shots to cut the deficit to 79-74 after being fouled on a three-point attempt with 1:40 to go. La Roche went 4-for-6 from the foul line over their next three possessions and the Mounties were unable to get any closer.

Bender led the Mounties offensively with 26 points on a 5-for-10 showing from behind the arc and a 5-for-5 clip at the free throw line. Darryl Sanders scored 17 points and added six rebounds and four steals, while Arin Wade scored nine points off the bench. Tre Brown dished five assists for the game.

The Mounties were hurt in the rebounding department as La Roche won the battle on the boards 46-27. Darrell Barton scored 24 points off the bench to lead the Redhawks.

Mount Aloysius drops to 3-9 in conference play and 6-13 overall and will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday when the Mounties travel to Medaille for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
