Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team competed in the Coaches v. Cancer Classic over the weekend with the game's being held on the Mounties home court. Mount Aloysius took a 93-88 defeat against Bethany on Friday before falling by a final margin of 108-95 to Penn State Altoona on Saturday.
The Mounties almost completed a valiant comeback attempt against the Bison on Friday. Down by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Mounties roared back to tie the game at 84-84 on a
Jourdan Lamberth with 3:30 remaining in the ballgame. After two Bethany free throws,
Tre Brown drove in for a layup to even things up at 86-86 with 2:35 to go. Down by one point, Mount Aloysius had four shot attempts over the next three possessions to take the lead but were unable to convert. After the Bison took a 91-86 lead,
Darryl Sanders cut it to three with a jumper with nine seconds showing on the clock. However, the Bison iced the game with two made free throws with six seconds left.
Five Mounties finished in double figures against the Bison with Sanders leading the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Lamberth had 17 points, and Brown finished with 14 points and eight assists.
Against Altoona, the Mounties fell into a similar hole as they were behind 49-41 as halftime. The Lions increased their lead to 71-55 with 13:43 left in the second half. The Mounties once again made a late push and cut the lead to 93-87 on two Lamberth free throws with 3:42 to go. Altoona quickly increased the gap back to double digits on their way to the win.
Lamberth registered 23 points to lead the Mounties on the offensive end.
Chad Eisenhuth contributed 21 points and five steals, and Brown was strong once again from the point guard position with 18 points, seven assists and three steals.
Mount Aloysius will return to action next Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon University Tournament. The Mounties will open up at 3 p.m. against the host school.
