Women's Basketball Drops Two in Opening Tournament

Westminster, MD - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team opened up its season over the weekend at the McDaniel College Tipoff Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Mounties fell to host McDaniel 73-63 in their opening game on Friday, then lost by a final score of 84-74 against Juniata on Saturday.

Over the course of the two games, Jessa Wright led the Mounties with a total of 30 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Lea Sammarco scored 14 points in the loss to Juniata, and Hannah Drenning scored 10 points apiece in each game for Mount Aloysius.

Against McDaniel, the Mounties fell into a 20-11 hole after one quarter and were down 28-19 with 6:29 remaining in the second quarter. However, Mount Aloysius stormed back over the next four minutes with an 11-0 run to take a 30-28 advantage. The Mounties went into halftime holding a 32-30 lead. Despite the strong second quarter, the home side jumped on the Mounties once again in the third quarter and outscored the visitors 26-13 in the period to take a commanding 56-45 lead into the final quarter. Mount Aloysius wasn't able to get any closer than nine points in the final session.

On Saturday in the consolation game, the Mounties and Eagles of Juniata squared off. Mount Aloysius held a 45-39 lead at halftime on the strength of 11 points from Breana Kendrick. Another tough third quarter for the Mounties saw the Eagles end the period with a four-point edge after outscoring Mount Aloysius 24-14. Juniata increased its lead to as much as 11 in the final quarter on their way to the victory.

The Mounties will return to the court Tuesday evening for their home opener at 6 p.m. against Frostburg State.
