Pittsburgh, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team fell in two tournament games over the weekend as the Mounties were defeated 102-67 on Saturday against host Carnegie Mellon and 90-72 against Goucher at the CMU DoubleTree Invitational.
Against CMU, the Mounties hung tough early and trailed by just a point at 15-14 after
Brian Reams drilled a three-point shot with 13:13 remaining in the opening half. The home side then went on a 17-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 32-16 advantage, and the hosts took a 50-27 lead into the break. Mount Aloysius was only able to cut the deficit to 19 in the second half before the hosts ran away with the victory.
Troy Williams had a strong game against CMU with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and six rebounds.
Chad Eisenhuth recorded 15 points and five boards, and
Brennan Garner shot a perfect 5-for-5 off the bench to notch 10 points.
Mount Aloysius and Goucher went back-and-forth throughout the opening half in Sunday's consolation game. With the game tied 29-29 with six minutes remaining in the opening half, the Mounties closed the period with a 12-4 run to carry a 41-33 lead into halftime.
In the second half,
Nick Burk slammed home a dunk off a pass from
Darryl Sanders three minutes into the session to increase the Mountie lead to 47-37. Goucher responded with a 13-0 run to take a 50-47 lead. Their run would continue as the Gophers increased their advantage to 63-50 halfway through the second half. Mount Aloysius wasn't able to recover down the stretch as the Mounties took the loss.
Williams continued his stellar play against Goucher with 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting while adding seven rebounds. For his two-game performance, Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sanders provided a strong all-around game with 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Tre Brown added nine points, eight boards, five assists and three steals.
The Mounties will return to the court next Saturday for their AMCC opener at home against D'Youville. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
