Breana Kendrick hit a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Mount Aloysius women's basketball team a 61-60 victory over host Bethany College on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
After
Jessa Wright cut the Bethany lead to 60-59 with a free throw with 36 seconds remaining, the Bison missed two free throws with 21 seconds left. The Mounties called timeout with seven seconds left, and out of the timeout Kendrick hit the game-winning basket.Â
The Bison controlled the later stages of the first quarter and led 17-10 after the opening session. In the second quarter, the Mounties chipped away at the Bethany lead and ended up taking a 24-22 advantage after Kendrick nailed a three-point shot with 3:52 to go before halftime. Mount Aloysius took a 31-30 lead into the halftime break.Â
The second half continued to be a back-and-forth affair up until the game's final moments. In the final minutes, Bethany took a 58-56 lead with 2:40 left on the clock. With 1:14 remaining,
Katie Bracken scored on a layup to tie the ballgame before the Bison hit two free throws with 44 seconds left to take a 60-58 advantage and set up the game's final possessions.
Kendrick scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Mounties while adding three steals. Bracken and
Alexia Servello each scored 13 points, and Wright recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.Â
The Mounties improve to 4-5 overall and will return to action Saturday against Pitt-Bradford. The game will be played at Saint Francis University and will tipoff at 5 p.m.Â
