Greensburg, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in conference play with a tight 68-65 victory over host Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday evening.
The Mounties fell into a 15-8 hole in the first quarter before storming back to lead 17-15 after
Katie Bracken scored the final basket of the quarter on a layup with one minute remaining in the period. In the second quarter,
Lea Sammarco drilled a three-point shot with 7:47 remaining to increase the Mountie lead to six at 23-17. Mount Aloysius held a close lead before taking a 34-31 advantage into halftime. The game remained a tight affair through the second half. The Mounties expanded their lead to 47-40 with 2:47 to go in the third quarter on a
Breana Kendrick layup and maintained a 51-47 lead after
Alexia Servello hit a jumper at the third-quarter buzzer.
In the final quarter,
Jessa Wright scored with 7:30 left to increase the Mountie lead to 59-51. However, Pitt-Greensburg wouldn't go away and cut the deficit to three points on two occassions down the stretch. The Bobcats then made it a 66-65 game in favor of the Mounties with 35 seconds remaining. Servello responded with a huge bucket with nine seconds to go, and Greensburg missed a three-point shot on its final attempt.
Wright paced the Mounties offensively with 16 points while adding seven rebounds. Sammarco had 15 points on the strength of a 4-for-9 showing from behind the arc, and Kendrick scored 15 points off the bench. On the defensive end, Bracken swiped four steals as Mount Aloysius forced 25 Pitt-Greensburg turnovers.
Mount Aloysius will return to the court on Saturday for another road matchup at Penn State Behrend. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
