Mounties Lose Overtime Battle at Altoona

Altoona, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team came back from a deficit that reached as high as 19 points in the second half to force overtime, but couldn't get anything going against host Penn State Altoona in the extra session as the Mounties fell by a final score of 109-95 on Wednesday evening in AMCC play. 

After a dominant first half, the Lions led 50-33 at the break and increased their advantage to as high as 57-38 with 16:48 to play in the game. For the second straight game, the Mounties came back from a large deficit down the stretch.

The Mounties started to chip their way back into the game and decreased the Altoona advantage to 64-58 on a Drew Knowles layup with 10:50 to go. Altoona clung to a small advantage and led 77-72 after Joe Dziabo hit two free throws with 5:52 left in the ballgame. Dziabo scored again at the 4:50 mark and Dillon Bender hit two free throws with 4:15 remaining to cut it to a one-point lead at 77-76 with 4:15 left to play.

After some back-and-forth play, Mount Aloysius took the lead with 46 seconds left on two free throws from Arin Wade that made it 80-79 in favor of the Mounties. The Mounties then got a defensive stop and Bender went 1-for-2 at the line. Altoona tied the game with 12 seconds left on two free throws, and Mount Aloysius was unable to get off a final shot after calling timeout.

The overtime session was dominated by the Lions as they scored the first 10 points of the period and never looked back on their way to the win. 

Five Mountie players finished in double figures. Bender scored a team-high 22 points and Darryl Sanders added 18. Tre Brown notched 12 points, five boards and four assists while Arin Wade scored 12 points and had three steals off the bench. Dziabo recorded 11 points and five rebounds, and Knowles grabbed a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.

The Mounties fall to 6-15 overall and 3-11 in AMCC play. They will return to the court on Saturday at home against D'Youville at 1 p.m.
