Spartans Edge Mounties in Final Seconds

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team fell by a final score of 70-67 to visiting D'Youville in a wire-to-wire contest on Saturday afternoon in conference action.

The teams were tied 65-65 after Breana Kendrick hit a huge three-point shot for the Mounties with 1:35 left to play in the game. After each side failed to take the lead on their next possession, the Spartans converted on a basket plus a free throw with 34 seconds to go to take a 68-65 lead. Alexia Servello hit a layup to cut the deficit to one before D'Youville hit two free throws. On their final possession, Mount Aloysius was unable to get off a shot attempt before the buzzer sounded.

The Mounties jumped out to a 14-6 lead to start the game before D'Youville climbed back to make it a 16-15 game in favor of the Mounties after one quarter. Mount Aloysius again jumped back in front to take a 23-15 advantage with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter before the Spartans closed the gap down the stretch and tied the game at 32-32 heading into halftime. The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter before a late 6-0 run from the visitors gave the Spartans a 55-49 lead heading into the final quarter. 

Servello scored 18 points to lead the Mounties offensively, while Kendrick and Hannah Drenning each scored 11 points. Kendrick added five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Kara Cordell nearly had a double-double effort with eight points and 10 rebounds, and Abbie Zinobile recorded a team-high 12 rebounds. Katie Bracken contributed five points and 10 boards off the bench.

Mount Aloysius registered a 50-42 rebounding advantage, while the Spartans held an advantage at the free throw line hitting 24-of-28 attempts while the Mounties made 10-of-16.

The Mounties fall to 10-12 overall and 7-8 in conference play. They will return to the court next Saturday at Penn State Behrend for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
