Mounties Complete Strong Spring Break Trip

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius baseball team had a strong spring break trip in Myrtle Beach as the Mounties went 5-2 overall from March 5th to March 11th. The Mounties played particularly well offensively as Mount Aloysius scored 57 runs over the seven-game trip.

The Mounties got their trip off to a hot start with a doubleheader sweep of John Jay on March 5th as Mount Aloysius won the two-game set by scores of 7-1 and 4-3. In game one, a Bryn Brown solo home run increased the Mountie advantage to 3-1 through four innings. Mount Aloysius tacked on four runs late in the ballgame and the Mountie pitching staff shut down the John Jay offense. In game two, the Mounties jumped all over the Bloodhounds with all four of their runs in the ballgame in the first inning. John Jay cut the deficit to one run late in the game, but the Mounties held on for the sweep.

The Mountie bats got hot offensively in day two of the trip as Mount Aloysius defeated Penn College by a final of 13-2. Leading 1-0 in the fourth inning, Benjamin Legath ripped a double to bring in Connor Bowie and Dylan Oswalt followed later in the inning with an RBI single that scored Matthew McCourt to make it 3-0. The Mounties added six runs in the fifth inning highlighted by a Brown three-run home run to right field. Leading 9-2 in the sixth inning, Bowie brought home two with a double to the gap to increase the Mountie lead to 11-2 on their way to the win. On the hill, Andrew Shreiner recorded the victory as he threw six innings and allowed just six hits and two earned runs while striking out six.

Mount Aloysius suffered its first defeat of the trip a day later in a 7-3 loss to Swarthmore. Legath put the Mounties in front 1-0 in the first inning with a double that drove in Chase Miller. Down 4-1 in the third, Bowie slammed a two-run shot to left field to cut the gap to 4-3. Swarthmore responded with two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth inning, and the Mounties couldn't generate any runs for the remainder of the ballgame. On the mound, Rodney Patterson was effective in relief as he threw five scoreless innings while allowing only three hits.

The Mounties got right back into the winning column in their next game with a 16-5 victory over Manhattanville. Legath led the charge with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate, including a three-run home run, four RBI's and two runs scored. Ian Helsel went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Miller and Bowie each registered two hits and Jesse Bortner added three RBI's. Tristan Gelvin earned the victory on the rubber, and Luke Stultz was credited with a three-inning save.

Mount Aloysius had a day off before returning to action against Penn State Berks on Thursday. The Mounties held a 4-3 lead through seven innings before the Nittany Lions scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to take a 10-4 advantage on their way to the win. Bowie and Legath again led the Mounties as Bowie went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Legath had a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with two RBI's.

On their final game of the trip, the Mounties flipped the script with a 10-8 comeback victory over Lancaster Bible. The Mounties trailed 8-3 through four innings before cutting the gap to 8-7 with a four-run fifth inning. Legath started the rally with a two-run home run before Oswalt (single) and Helsel (double) added RBI hits. Mount Aloysius took the lead in the sixth inning as Bortner recorded an RBI single, and McCourt drew a walk later in the inning with the bases loaded. Mount Aloysius received strong relief efforts on the mound from Nicholas DiDiano, Jacob Bryja and Patterson as the trio allowed just one run over 6 and 1/3 innings on the hill.

The Mounties are now 6-4 overall and will return to the diamond on Tuesday at home against NCAA Division II Clarion. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
