Benjamin Legath went 4-for-6 with seven RBI's and a grand slam home run to lead the Mount Aloysius baseball team past St. Vincent by a final score of 13-5 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Mounties recorded 19 hits as six players registered multi-hit performances on the day.
Ian Helsel,
Chase Miller and
Kyle Droz each notched three hits, while
Bryn Brown and
Connor Bowie had two hits in addition to Legath's four.
Miller got the Mounties started offensively with a RBI single to right field in the top of the first that brought home Bowie. Legath helped Mount Aloysius expand the lead to 2-0 in the third inning with an RBI double, and Miller followed with another RBI single to make it a 3-0 ballgame. After the Bearcats got one run back in the fourth inning, Legath (double) and Miller (single) once again registered RBI hits in the top of the fifth that increased the lead to 5-1.
With the Mounties leading 6-2 heading into the sixth inning, Legath stepped up with the bases loaded and one out. He powered a home run to left field to clear the bases and give Mount Aloysius control with a 10-2 advantage. St. Vincent cut the deficit to 10-5, but the Mounties responded with three runs in their final two at-bats to seal the victory.
Bowie ended the day with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate while scoring five runs. Helsel and Brown each added two runs scored apiece. On the mound,
Andrew Shreiner was effective as he allowed just five hits and one earned run through six innings of work.
Christopher Nolan,
Rodney Patterson and
Brady Wright then combined to close the game for Mount Aloysius as the trio allowed only one hit in the final three innings.
With his seven-RBI performance, Legath now leads the entire AMCC with 21 RBI's on the season. He also tops the conference with nine doubles and is tied for the lead with three home runs. Bowie currently leads the conference with 22 runs scored.
The Mounties improve to 7-5 overall and will return to the field on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Gettysburg set to begin at 12:30 p.m.
