Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, PA - The La Roche College Redhawks struck for a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth in the second game of a doubleheader with the Mount Aloysius baseball team on Wednesday afternoon in the AMCC opener for both teams. The Redhawks defeated the Mounties 4-0 in game one followed by the 8-4 walkoff victory in game two.
In game one, La Roche got on the board in the bottom of the first with three runs. The Redhawks added one run in the fourth inning on their way to the shutout win. The two teams were only able to generate seven combined hits in the ballgame.
Ian Helsel and
Benjamin Legath each recorded doubles for the Mounties, while
Chase Miller registered a single.
Mountie starter
Kyle Droz (4.2 innings) allowed four hits and four earned runs. Reliever
Nicholas DiDiano (1.1 innings) was perfect against the four batters he faced.
Mount Aloysius hit the scoreboard first in game two when a Legath single to left field in the top of the first brought home
Connor Bowie. In the third inning, the Mounties expanded the lead to 3-0 highlighted by a Legath RBI double. La Roche responded with two runs in their next at-bat to cut the deficit to 3-2. The score remained the same until the Redhawks notched one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-3 advantage.
Legath came up huge for the Mounties in the eighth inning. With two outs, he hit a solo home run that evened the game at 4-4. The Redhawks threatened in the bottom of the inning with two runners on and one out, but
Brady Wright forced a flyout and registered a strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Mounties were retired in order in the top of the ninth. La Roche responded by loading the bases with one out before a home run from from pinch hitter Cody Scruggs ended the game.
In game two,
Andrew Shreiner allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out five in 5 and 1/3 innings on the hill for the Mounties.
Mount Aloysius falls to 8-11 overall and will return to the field on Saturday at home for an AMCC doubleheader against Medaille set to begin at 1 p.m.
