Box Score 2 Huntingdon, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team completed a two-game sweep of host Juniata College on Wednesday afternoon as the Mounties defeated the Eagles by scores of 8-7 and 8-5 in a non-conference doubleheader.
In game one, the two sides each notched a pair of runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Mounties
Chase Miller came through with a single that drove in two to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. The Eagles responded with two runs of their own to tie up the ballgame. Juniata went on to score four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-3 advantage.
The Mounties rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
Jesse Bortner provided the big hit of the inning with a single to left field that brought home
Dylan Oswalt and Miller to tie the game at 6-6. Juniata responded with one run in the bottom of the inning.
Mount Aloysius went into their final at-bat down 7-6. With runners on second and third with one out, Bortner lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Oswalt to tie the game at 7-7.
Ian Helsel then followed with an RBI single to give the Mounties the lead, and
Rodney Patterson threw a scoreless final inning to secure the victory.
Miller went 3-for-4 in game one, while Bortner and
Benjamin Legath each registered two hits.
Game two featured a pitcher's duel early on with
Jacob Bryja on the hill for the Mounties. Mount Aloysius scored the only run in the game's first four innings on a
Matthew McCourt RBI double in the second. The Mounties would tack on another run in the fifth on a
Connor Bowie sacrifice fly. Juniata took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles lead didn't hold for long as Mount Aloysius scored four runs in the top of the sixth. McCourt tripled to right field to score Bortner, and Helsel followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Bowie then slammed a two-run home run as the Mounties regained the lead at 6-5.
Mount Aloysius added two runs in the seventh as McCourt again came through with his third extra-base hit of the game on an RBI double to make it 8-5, and
Brady Wright closed out the game on the mound.
The Mounties improve to 12-11 overall and will return to the field on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Penn State Behrend beginning at 1 p.m.
