Pittsburgh, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team picked up a huge upset victory of top-seed La Roche as the Mounties won 7-5 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon in an AMCC Tournament game.
The Mounties received an outstanding pitching performance from
Andrew Shreiner, who pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs against a high-powered Redhawk offense.
Rodney Patterson closed out the game in relief and sealed the win with a scoreless 10th inning.Â
La Roche scored two runs in the first inning before the Mounties responded with a run in the top of the third.
Ian Helsel stroked a single to right field to score
Jordan Campano to cut the deficit to 2-1. The scoreline would hold until Mount Aloysius struck for four runs in the seventh inning.
Matthew McCourt started the scoring with a solo home run, and later in the inning
Benjamin Legath powered a three-run home run that handed the Mounties a 5-2 lead.
La Roche rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Down to their last out, the Redhawks hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings. However, the Mounties stayed resilient and answered with two runs on a
Kyle Droz RBI double and McCourt RBI single. Patterson then retired the side in order to clinch the victory.Â
The Mounties registered 17 hits in the win led by a 4-for-5 showing at the plate from Campano. Legath and
Bryn Brown each had three hits.
With the victory, the Mounties move on to play Penn State Behrend, who defeated Pitt-Greensburg in the opening game of the day. The winner of the Mount Aloysius-Behrend game will move on to the AMCC Championship, with the loser facing the winner of a matchup between La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg for a spot in the final.
