Steubenville, OH - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team made a second-half comeback and held on for a 63-61 victory over host Franciscan University on Wednesday evening in conference action.
The Mounties were down 33-28 at the halftime break, and the host Barons increased their advantage to 40-28 with 17:12 remaining in the ballgame. Franciscan still held a double-digit lead at 46-36 with 12:41 to go before Mount Aloysius went on a 7-0 run capped by a free throw from
Tre Brown with 9:43 left that made it 46-43. The Mounties kept chipping away and eventually took a lead of their own at 52-50 on a Brown three-point shot with 6:17 showing on the clock.
The two sides went back-and-forth, and the visiting Mounties held a three-point lead at 58-55 when
Darryl Sanders hit a jumper with 1:37 to play to increase the advantage to five. The Barons cut the deficit to one at 60-59 with 16 seconds left before Sanders was fouled with 11 seconds remaining. Sanders hit the first free throw and missed the second, but
Nick Burk came up with a huge offensive rebound off the miss. Sanders then hit two more free throws to seal the win before the Barons hit a basket at the buzzer.
Sanders paced the Mounties with 20 points and five assists on the offensive end. Brown had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Both
Chad Eisenhuth and
Troy Williams notched 10 points apiece, and Williams added nine rebounds.Â
The Mounties improve to 3-6 in conference play and will return to the court Saturday with another AMCC road contest at D'Youville at 3 p.m.Â
