Pittsburgh, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team defeated host La Roche College by a final score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams. With the victory, the Mounties earn the #2 seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament.
For the third consecutive game, Mountie freshman
Will Funez scored early on as he got behind the La Roche defense after a pass from
Jonathan Fernandez and blasted a shot past the Redhawk keeper to give Mount Aloysius a 1-0 advantage less than five minutes into the game. The Mounties outshot the Redhawks 12-6 over the first half of play but neither side could find the scoreboard after the game's first goal, and the visitors went into halftime holding the one-goal lead.
Just over five minutes into the second half,
James Maddison found Funez with a perfectly placed cross that was struck into the net in one touch to expand the lead to 2-0. Mount Aloysius allowed four shots over the remainder of the contest but
James Eyre and the Mountie backline were able to maintain the team's third straight shutout and tenth shutout of the season.
The two goals for Funez bring his season total to 14 goals, and his nine goals in conference play are tied with teammate
Joshua Devlin for the most among all AMCC players.
The Mounties conclude their regular season with an overall record of 16-2-1. They now have a first-round playoff bye and will host the winner of #3 Medaille vs. #6 D'Youvllle next Wednesday at noon in Cresson.
