Mounties Top Spartans in Shutout Fashion

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team scored two first-half goals and limited the visiting D'Youville Spartans to three shots on goal as the Mounties recorded a 2-0 conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kyle Marshall got the Mounties on the scoreboard as he scored seven minutes into the contest. After a scramble in the box, Marshall struck for a low to the bottom corner of the goal to give Mount Aloysius the early 1-0 lead. The Mounties held that advantage until 14 minutes remained in the opening half. Jonathan Fernandez hit a shot from outside of the box that was knocked down by the hand of a D'Youville defender, and Joshua Devlin scored off of the ensuing penalty kick to increase the Mountie lead to 2-0.

Goalkeeper James Eyre (two saves) and the Mountie backline held strong in the second half to keep the shutout.

Devlin led the Mounties with five shots for the game, while Graham Hunter and Will Funez each registered four shots. Mount Aloysius had a 24-10 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

The Mounties improve to 10-2-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. They will face Franciscan on Tuesday in a conference match beginning at 2 p.m.
