Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team fell on a late goal to visiting Medaille College on Wednesday afternoon as the Mavericks edged the Mounties by a 1-0 scoreline in an AMCC Semifinal playoff match.
Both teams had their chances early on. 10 minutes into the game,
Joshua Devlin ripped a strike that was saved by the Medaille keeper. On the ensuing play off of the rebound,
Cameron Kemp also had a shot stopped. Six minutes later,
Will Funez took a shot from 25 yards out that beat the Medaille keeper but rang off the crossbar. The Mounties outshot the Mavericks 11-9 in the opening period, however neither side found the scoreboard and the game went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, the Mounties took three consecutive corner kicks 16 minutes into the period but weren't able to find the back of the net. The scoreless contest continued deep into the second half when the Mavericks were able to earn three consecutive corners as well with five minutes to play. Off of the third corner, Medaille was able to put a rebound into the goal to take the 1-0 advantage.
Mount Aloysius pressed for the equalizer with three shots on goal in the final five minutes but couldn't find the tying goal.
"We are obviously disappointed with the result. We felt we had the better of possession and play for large stretches of the game, and it was frustrating to not be able to get that final finish. Medaille was a quality opponent, found their opportunity and took advantage of it," Head Coach
Matt Davis said.
In net, goalkeeper
James Eyre was fantastic for the Mounties with 13 saves. Funez led the Mounties with six shots while Devin recorded four shots.
"We had a tremendous season and after time I think the guys will realize that. Much of the success goes to our seniors
Kyle Marshall,
Graham Hunter,
Diron Duah and
Andre Thorpe and how they guided a very young team," Davis said. "We had a team where everyone throughout the roster made important contributions throughout the season."
The Mounties set a program record with 16 victories in the 2017 season, eclipsing the previous mark of 12 set in the 2015 season.
