Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener

Frostburg, MD - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team put forth a solid showing in their season opener on Wednesday evening as the Mounties defeated host Frostburg State by a final score of 73-62 in non-conference action.

Jessa Wright scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals to lead the Mounties, while Kara Cordell registered a double-double effort of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Bracken also scored 14 points while adding nine rebounds and two steals for Mount Aloysius.

Neither side led by more than five points in a back-and-forth first half. Holding a 39-37 lead with 6:36 remaining in the third quarter, the Mounties went on a quick 9-2 run capped by a Breana Kendrick layup with five minutes left in the period that made it a 48-39 ballgame in favor of the visitors. As the quarter came to a close, Kendrick hit a driving layup with 39 seconds remaining to keep the advantage at nine points as the Mounties led 52-43 heading into the final period. In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats cut the deficit to six points on two occasions. However, the home team wouldn't get any closer as Mount Aloysius scored the final five points of the game in the last minute of play.

The Mounties held the Bobcats to 33.8 percent shooting from the field and had a big advantage at the free throw line as Mount Aloysius went 26-for-35 at the line while Frostburg went 10-for-14.

The Mounties return to the court on Saturday with a 3:30 matchup against New York University on the road.
