Mounties Drop Two Close Contests in NYC

Manhattan, NY - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team played some top non-conference competition in New York City over the weekend while dropping two close games. On Saturday, Mount Aloysius suffered a 69-65 setback to host New York University before falling by a final score of 65-58 on Sunday to Johnson & Wales University.

Against NYU on Saturday, the Mounties led 35-31 at halftime on the strength of 21 first-half points from Jessa Wright. The home side then came out storming in the third quarter and outscored the Mounties 17-7 in the period to take a 48-42 lead into the final period. In the fourth quarter, the Mounties cut the deficit to one point at 54-53 with 4:41 remaining in the game on a Wright layup, and led 55-54 after Wright hit a free throw with two minutes left. With 58 seconds to play, Abby Kulick scored on a layup to allow the Mounties to regain the lead at 57-56. Mount Aloysius held the one-point lead until NYU hit a three-point shot with two seconds remaining to win the ballgame.

Wright scored 24 points while adding 10 rebounds and three steals for the Mounties. Kulick also finished in double figures with 11 points in the loss.

On Sunday against Johnson & Wales, Mount Aloysius trailed 31-28 at halftime and 50-41 after three quarters. The Mounties trailed by 11 during the fourth quarter before cutting the gap to five points with just over a minute to play on two free throws from Rachel Robinson, but weren't able to come all the way back.

Alexia Servello led the Mounties offensively on Sunday with 19 points, and Robinson scored 10 points off the bench. Kulick recorded nine points and eight rebounds, and Wright collected 10 rebounds in defeat.

The Mounties will return to the court on Saturday with their home opener against Eastern Mennonite at 2 p.m.
