Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team won their home opener on Saturday afternoon as the Mounties defeated Eastern Mennonite by a final score of 81-76 in non-conference action.
The Mounties led 18-14 after the first quarter after a bucket by
Kara Cordell with five seconds remaining pushed the Mountie lead to four points. Eastern Mennonite responded with a dominant second quarter which saw the visiting side outscore the Mounties 26-15 as they took a 40-33 advantage into the halftime break. Mount Aloysius quickly erased the deficit in the third quarter and tied the game at 43-43 on a layup from
Alexia Servello with 6:27 left in the period. The Royals jumped out to a lead once again, however, and led by seven points at 57-50 heading into the final period.
Trailing by nine points in the fourth quarter, the Mounties stormed back with a 16-6 run over the course of a five-minute stretch to take a 66-65 lead with 4:27 to play after another bucket from Servello. With the game tied at 71-71 with 1:50 remaining, the Mounties Cordell took over with six straight points from the free throw line to hand the Mounties a 77-71 lead with less than a minute to play. Mount Aloysius then hit 4-of-6 free throw attempts in the closing moments to seal the victory.
Cordell scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Mounties, while
Jessa Wright produced a double-double effort of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Servello scored 13 points and
Katie Bracken also finished in double figures with 12 points. Bracken and
Abby Kulick both had three steals defensively as the Mounties forced 25 Royal turnovers for the ballgame.
The Mounties improve to 2-2 overall on the season and will return to action next Saturday for their conference opener on the road at D'Youville College.
