Mounties Win Conference Opener at D'Youville

Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team captured their first victory of the season with a 71-66 win over host D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon in conference action.

The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the contest. After D'Youville took a 22-9 lead just over five minutes into the ballgame, the Mounties cut the deficit to 28-25 at the 8:23 mark after Julian Stover drained a three-point shot off of a pass from Trent McErlane. Mount Aloysius tied the game at 32-32 with 3:29 to play in the opening half before taking a 37-34 lead into halftime capped by a putback shot courtesy of Tommy Pisula as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Neither side led by more than six points throughout the second half as both the Mounties and Spartans took turns taking the lead. With 3:27 left on the clock, Josiah Jones came up huge with a three-point shot to give the Mounties a 66-64 advatange. Jones then scored on a driving layup with 2:07 remaining to make it 69-66 in favor of Mount Aloysius. The Mounties then dug in defensively with three stops over the last two minutes, and McErlane hit two free throws with ten seconds remaining to secure the conference victory.

The Mounties had five players in double figures led by 14 points apiece from Ramel Stephens and Pisula. Stover had 13 points and McErlane added 12 points, while Jones contributed 10 points. Pisula also grabbed 12 rebounds in a double-double effort and McErlane led the Mounties with three steals.

The win is the first at Mount Aloysius for Head Coach Will Cabrera. The Mounties will return to the court on Wednesday with their home opener for a conference matchup against Pitt-Greensburg at 6 p.m.
