Lynchburg, VA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team lost its season opener as the Mounties dropped a doubleheader affair by scores of 6-3 and 12-7 to host Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Mounties jumped out to a 2-0 lead highlighted by an RBI single in the first inning courtesy of
Kyle Droz and an RBI single in the second inning off the bat of
TJ Wardwell. The home side responded with three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings to seize a 6-2 advantage.
Matthew McCourt got one run back with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but the Mounties weren't able to complete the rally as the Hornets won game one.
Jordan Campano, Droz, and
Vincent Jacob each recorded two hits for Mount Aloysius in game one. On the mound,
Rodney Patterson was handed the loss after giving up seven hits and six runs through 4 and 2/3 innings of work.
Ryan McElwee was solid out of the bullpen as he throw 1 and 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
In game two, the home team jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings of play. Mount Aloysius responded with a four-run inning in their third at-bat.
Bryn Brown ripped an RBI single to get the Mounties on the board before Droz provided the highlight with a three-run home run to right field that cut the deficit to 7-4. Lynchburg got two runs right back in the bottom of the inning, and held a 12-5 advantage through four innings.
Sam Keibler notched a double with two outs in the Mounties last at-bat that drove in two runs to decrease the lead to 12-7, but Wardwell grounded out with two runners on to end the game.
Campano again registered two hits to finish with four hits on the day, and McCourt went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Michael McCourt (1 and 1/3 innings) and
Luke Stultz (1 inning) threw shutout ball in relief.Â
Mount Aloysius will return to the field for their Spring Break trip on March 4th for a doubleheader against Lehman College in Myrtle Beach, SC.Â
