Women's Basketball Falls to Altoona

Altoona, PA - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team was edged by host Penn State Altoona by a final score of 73-65 on Wednesday evening in conference action. 

Breana Kendrick paced the Mounties offensively with 22 points. Katie Bracken pulled in 14 rebounds, while Kara Cordell continued her strong play off the bench with 12 points and nine rebounds. 

The Mounties were down 15-12 after one quarter of play, and the Lions gradually built a double-digit advantage before taking a 36-26 lead into the halftime break. With 6:46 remaining in the third quarter, Alexia Servello hit a jumper to cut the Altoona lead to 38-34. The Mounties continued to work and Cordell made it a 53-50 game in favor of the Lions on the Mounties first possession of the fourth quarter when she drained a three-point shot. With 6:08 remaining in the game, Kendrick was successful on a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 58-58.

The teams traded baskets before Altoona led by six points at 66-60 with a minute and a half to play. Cordell hit a free throw, then grabbed her own miss off of her second free throw before hitting a layup to cut the deficit to 66-63. With 52 seconds left, Kendrick made a layup to make the Lion lead 66-65. Altoona responded with a 1-for-2 showing at the free throw line. On their next possession, the Mounties had two chances to take the lead but Jessa Wright missed a three-point attempt and Antwanye' Parks was off on a layup. The Lions then went 6-for-6 at the line to seal the victory. 

The Mounties had trouble getting anything going on the offensive end in the loss. Mount Aloysius shot 28-for-93 (30.1 percent) from the field and hit just 5 of 35 three-point shots on the evening. The Mounties did win the turnover battle, committing just eight to 17 for Altoona.

The Mounties fall to 9-13 overall and 7-8 in conference play with the loss. They will return to the court on Saturday with a home contest at 1 p.m. against Medaille College.
