Mounties Race Past SVC, Fall to Gettysburg in Baseball Action

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team put forth an offensive explosion in a 17-9 victory over visiting St. Vincent College on Thursday before falling by scores of 8-1 and 5-2 against host Gettysburg College on Saturday in non-conference baseball action.

After St. Vincent recorded two runs in the game's opening at-bat, the Mounties responded with a six-run showing in the bottom of the inning. TJ Wardwell stole home on a double steal before Chase Miller drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the ballgame. Anthony Rocco then provided the biggest hit of the inning with a double that cleared the bases to make it 5-2. Mount Aloysius expanded a 6-3 lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by RBI singles from Jordan Campano and Patrick Jobes.

The Mounties built an 11-5 advantage before the Bearcats chipped away to make it 11-9 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The home team responded as Jobes hit a two-run home run and Matthew McCourt added a solo home run. Two batters later, Miller singled in two more Mounties before Rocco added an RBI double to expand the lead to 17-9. Luke Stultz, Rodney Patterson and Scott Schultz combined to throw three scoreless innings in the final three SVC at-bats to seal the win in the Mounties home opener.

Rocco went 3-for-5 with five RBI's and two runs scored, and Miller went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and three runs scored to lead the Mounties offensively against St. Vincent.

The Mounties offense didn't continue against Gettysburg as Mount Aloysius only was able to record 10 hits and three total runs in the doubleheader. McCourt provided the offense in game one with a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Vincent Jacob led the Mounties in game two with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate. In game two against the Bullets, Rodney Patterson threw 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The Mounties hold an overall record of 4-13 heading into their conference opener on Wednesday. Mount Aloysius will host La Roche for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
