Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team fell by final scores of 14-7 and 12-1 to nationally-ranked La Roche in the conference opening games for both teams on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, the Mounties faced a 4-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third and one out,
Matthew McCourt ripped a double to score
Jordan Campano and
Vincent Jacob to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Kyle Droz followed with a double that brought in McCourt to tie the game, and Droz ended up scoring later in the inning on a wild pitch to give Mount Aloysius the 5-4 advantage.
With the Mounties holding a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning, the Redhawks exploded for seven runs to seize an 11-5 lead. In the bottom of the inning,
Daniel Singer lined a double to bring in McCourt to decrease the La Roche lead to 11-6, but the Redhawks scored three runs in their next to at-bats to seal the victory.
McCourt reached base in all four of his at-bats in game one with two doubles, a walk and a hit by pitch and scored four runs to lead the Mounties offensively. Droz, Singer and
Andrew Pasko added two hits apiece.
In game two, the Redhawks scored four runs in the top of the second inning and added four more in the third to take an 8-0 advantage. The Redhawks continued to increase their lead and held a 12-0 advantage heading into the final Mountie at-bat. The Mounties got on the board in their final plate appearance when
Joe Hudak drove in
Dalton Garlock with an RBI single, but La Roche recorded the final out on the next hitter to end the ballgame.
The Mounties will return to the field on Saturday with a conference doubleheader at home against Penn State Behrend. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
