Mountie Baseball Takes Two from Juniata

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team earned a pair of victories on Wednesday afternoon as the Mounties defeated Juniata by scores of 7-4 and 13-11 in extra innings in non-conference action.

In game one, Matthew McCourt continued his power surge with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to hand the Mounties an early lead. It was his 12th home run of the season. Juniata responded with the next three runs of the ballgame before the Mounties came back with a six-run explosion in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kyle Droz and Chase Miller hit back-to-back RBI singles to get the scoring started in the at-bat before Jordan Campano drove a double to the gap to score two more and give Mount Aloysius a 5-3 lead. Two batters later, Anthony Rocco hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller and the Mountie scoring was completed courtesy of an RBI double from Patrick Jobes.

Rodney Patterson came on to secure the win in the seventh inning after Michael McCourt went six innings to earn the victory. Offensively, Campano led the way in game one for the Mounties with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair throughout featuring strong offensive showings from each team. The Mounties led 7-3 in the sixth inning following a two-run home run from Droz, but the Eagles responded to force extra innings and led 11-7 heading into the Mount's at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. The Mounties rallied and would tie the ballgame at 11-11 following a double from Bryan Buzi that drove in two and a single from TJ Wardwell later in the inning that brought in two more.

In the top of the ninth, the Eagles posted a run to take a 12-11 advantage. Once again, the Mounties rallied in the bottom half. Dalton Garlock started off the inning with a double and came around on a single from McCourt to tie things up 12-12. Later in the inning, Mount Aloysius had the bases loaded with one out when Wardwell again came up clutch with a walkoff single that scored McCourt to give the Mounties the victory.

The Mounties had 17 hits in game two highlighted by a 6-for-6 performance at the plate from Garlock. Garlock hit three doubles, stole three bases and scored five runs to spearhead the Mounties.

Mount Aloysius improves to 9-19 overall and will return to the diamond on Friday with a conference doubleheader at Medaille set to begin at 1 p.m.
