Mountie Baseball Splits with Medaille

Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team split a conference doubleheader with visiting Medaille on Friday afternoon as the Mounties fell 5-2 in game one before earning an 8-7 victory in game two.

In Friday's opening game, the two teams were scoreless until both sides scored two runs each in the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, Matthew McCourt doubled home Daniel Singer, and Kyle Droz then stepped up with an RBI single that brought in McCourt to tie the ballgame. Down 3-2 in the sixth inning, Mount Aloysius put runners on second and third with two outs but were unable to capitalize. The Mavericks added two insurance runs in the seventh before closing out the game one win.

TJ Wardwell went 3-for-3 with a double in game one and Dalton Garlock went 2-for-4. Tyghe Bowers was handed the loss on the mound after allowing three runs in 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

In game two, the Mounties built a 3-0 lead through four innings highlighted by two RBIs from Wardwell on a single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Medaille battled back and eventually took a 6-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Mounties countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning that included a Garlock RBI single and McCourt sacrifice fly that made it 8-6 in favor of the home side. Medaille notched one run in the eighth inning, but Tristan Gelvin threw a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory for the Mounties.

Garlock added three hits in game two to complete a five-hit day at the plate. Wardwell and Chase Miller added two hits apiece, and Patrick Jobes scored two runs in the win. 

The Mounties now stand at 4-6 in conference play and will return to the field on Tuesday for another home conference doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg set to begin at 1 p.m.
