Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius baseball team took a two-game conference sweep of D'Youville as the Mounties defeated the Spartans by scores of 14-0 and 13-5 on Saturday afternoon on the road.
With the victories, the Mounties finish the AMCC regular season with a record of 8-8 and have clinched their ninth straight appearance in the conference tournament. Mount Aloysius has clinched the sixth seed for the tournament and will travel to #3 seed Pitt-Greensburg next Saturday for a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the AMCC Final Four the following weekend.
Game one was highlighted by a complete-game shutout on the mound by
Tyghe Bowers, who allowed just four hits while striking out seven. The Mounties got on the scoreboard in the second inning following a
Dalton Garlock RBI single that scored
Jordan Campano. The visitors added three runs in the third inning with the gap increasing to 4-0 after
Daniel Singer stole home.
Mount Aloysius led 4-0 until the sixth when the Mounties exploded for nine runs with Singer providing the power with a three-run home run to left field that made it a 12-0 ballgame.
TJ Wardwell capped the scoring with an RBI single to increase the advantage to 13-0. The Mounties added one more run in the seventh to complete their scoring in the victory.
Wardwell, Garlock and Droz each had three hits in game one to lead the Mounties offensively while Singer recorded three RBIs.
In game two, the Mounties jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with
Matthew McCourt delivering a two-run home run to center field. D'Youville responded over their next three at-bats to even the game at 4-4, and the Mounties led 7-5 after seven innings of play. Mount Aloysius expanded the lead to 10-5 in the eighth after McCourt drove in Wardwell with a single and Campano followed later in the inning with a double that brought home two more. In the Mount's final at-bat, Garlock and McCourt recorded RBI singles and Droz completed the scoring with an RBI groundout that made it 13-5.
Wardwell went 4-for-6 with three runs scored in game two and McCourt was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Rodney Patterson earned the win on the mound after going 5 and 1/3 innings, and
Creek Miller threw 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
